The Pantheon is a former Roman temple that is now a church, known as the Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs (Basilica di Santa Maria ad Martyres). It was originally commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD) and completed around 27 BC. However, the original structure was destroyed by fire in 80 AD. The current building was rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian between 118 and 128 AD.
The name "Pantheon" comes from the Ancient Greek words "pan" (meaning "all") and "theos" (meaning "gods"), signifying that the temple was dedicated to all the gods of ancient Rome. The Pantheon's design and engineering are remarkable for its time, with its massive dome being one of the largest unreinforced concrete domes in the world.
