Situated in the heart of the 14th century, Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara, housing the revered City Pillar Shrine, is renowned for its colossal chedi, boasting dimensions of 282 feet in height and 144 feet in width at the base.

The term "Luang" in the northern dialect translates to "large," aptly describing the magnitude of the Buddhist chedi within Wat Chedi Luang. Soaring to a height of 98 meters and spanning a diameter of 54 meters, it holds the distinction of being Chiang Mai's most expansive chedi. Originally constructed in 1481 during the rule of King Mengrai, the present-day Chedi Luang is a meticulous restoration carried out after the deconstruction of the chedi in 1545 due to an earthquake.

The ordination hall situated at the forefront is a splendid example of Lanna architecture, characterized by its captivating serpents, which remain among the most iconic features. Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara welcomes visitors daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, inviting them to explore the historical and architectural marvels within its sacred grounds.
